Facing the Rising Sun: Forty-nine Lessons for the Authentic Self
by Lathardus Goggins II, Ed.D.

is a resource to help build a positive social-emotional, conscious, and competent sense of self rooted in the African-centered principles of the Nguzo Saba.

The Facing the Rising Sun card deck is organized into seven suits (one for each principle) with seven lessons for each principle. Each lesson is an independent lesson that does not require another do be done first. Therefore, any lesson can be done in any order (1, 2, 3 or 3, 1, 2 or 2, 3, 1, etc.)

Collectively the 49 lessons are designed to facilitate a sense of self that is more conscious, engaged, and authentic. Facing the Rising Sun is great to use for rites of passage, in a youth development program, as a Kwanzaa activity, or as a family activity/parenting strategy.
